Andy Cannon helped Wrexham pick up 2-0 win at Notts County
ANDY CANNON shrugged off the disappointment of picking up a suspension by playing a starring role on his comeback and the midfielder said all the Wrexham players rose to the plate.
Phil Parkinson’s side won 2-0 against Notts County on Saturday to remain third in League Two on the same number of points as the Magpies and five behind leaders Stockport County.
Shown a straight red card following a late challenge in the 1-0 victory at Crawley on October 7, just minutes after coming on as substitute, Cannon served a three-match ban but earned an instant recall at Meadow Lane and the 27-year-old produced a brilliant performance as the holding midfielder.
Cannon says it was the “perfect” game to make his return, with more than 16,000 fans present in Nottingham – including 2,900 from Wrexham – to see the top of the table clash where victory extended the Reds’ unbeaten run to eight games in all competitions.
“I know it was late but personally I didn’t think it was a red card,” said Cannon.
“I got suspended but was able to play against Crewe in the EFL Trophy.
“Then to get chucked back in for a game like that with Notts County was perfect.
“The atmosphere was great, it was three points and we played really well.
“There is no easy game in this league. We have gone up a level and everyone brings something different.
“Notts County are a great team. They move the ball well but we had a game-plan and we stuck to it.
“Everyone to a man was superb and it was a well-deserved three points.
“The fans who travelled were superb and it was a perfect day for them as well.”
Top scorer Elliot Lee broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute with his 10th strike of the season and substitute Ollie Palmer quickly made it 2-0.
Those quick-fire goals took the stuffing out of County who were pipped to the National League title by Wrexham last season but joined their rivals in the EFL after winning the play-off final.
“We have got players in the changing room who are clinical,” said Cannon.
“Elliot has scored again and Ollie has come on and scored.
“We have shown it over the last few months and even last season that we can get a couple of goals really quick.
“We know we can do it and it is a good thing to have.”
Wrexham had some tough fixtures, particularly away from home, in October and Cannon says the players deserve credit for coming through the month unbeaten.
“It has been tough when you look at the teams we have played,” he added.
“But it was a great month and a good total of points.
“We had a bit of a rocky start to the season but we are finding our feet and I think we can get even better as well.”
