On the latest episode of “College Football Smothered and Covered,” SiriusXM’s Barrett Sallee made a bold prediction regarding Texas as they transition to the SEC. Sallee expressed confidence that the Longhorns are poised to contend for a conference title in their inaugural season in the SEC. He argued that Texas has demonstrated its readiness for SEC competition, citing their recent success, including a College Football Playoff appearance last season.

“Spare me the notion that Texas isn’t prepared for the SEC. They’re built like an SEC team,” Sallee asserted. “They’ve defeated one of the giants of SEC football and have proven themselves on the national stage by nearly winning a College Football Playoff semifinal with a late surge.”

Despite some fans expressing doubts about head coach Steve Sarkisian’s record at Texas, Sallee came to his defense, emphasizing that coaching success often requires time for growth and self-discovery.

“While Sark’s record may not immediately position him as one of the nation’s top coaches, it’s important to recognize that coaching identity evolves over time,” Sallee explained. “For Steve Sarkisian, this process has occurred on multiple levels.”

Sarkisian has compiled a 25-14 record over his first three seasons with the Longhorns, which notably includes their first-ever College Football Playoff appearance and a conference title. With the recent expansion of the playoff format, Texas may have a clearer path to postseason success. Nonetheless, winning an SEC title in their debut season would be a remarkable achievement for the Longhorns.
