West Ham United under pressure to continue blistering start as £122m news emerges

Much to the surprise of many, including even some West Ham fans, the Hammers have made a blistering start to the new season, with the club currently sitting fourth in the Premier League table after their four matches.

Following their opening-day tie with Bournemouth, David Moyes’ squad has won over Chelsea, Brighton, and Luton Town.

This outstanding start has undoubtedly been aided by the club’s successful summer transfer window, which saw the signings of James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Mohammed Kudus, and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

The Hammers spent a total of £122.6 million to recruit such players to East London, according to Sky Sports (2 September). This number places the team seventh in the Premier League, with their London rivals Chelsea far ahead of the pack, having spent £434.5 million.

Eighth position on such a list is not the worst place to be, but it does put a lot of pressure on West Ham to do well in all competitions in the coming months.

Unfortunately for Moyes and his team, the season is only going to get tougher from here on out, with the club’s Europa League campaign scheduled to begin soon.

Last season, the Hammers struggled to compete on all fronts for several months before ultimately getting things back on track, whether due to a lack of squad depth or simply a lack of talent.

The season ended in triumph at the London Stadium, with the club securing Premier League survival and lifting the Europa Conference League championship.

For a long time, it appeared like the Hammers would have to pick between the two, a scenario that fans do not want to repeat this time.
