In the opening chapter, Auckland FC revealed its first player signings on Thursday, marking a positive step forward.

Bigger names are anticipated, especially among marquee recruits and international players, but the club is focusing on a local foundation. Fans relate best to homegrown talent, as emphasized on Thursday when Cam Howieson, Francis De Vries, Michael Woud, and Jesse Randall were introduced as the inaugural players for the blue and black team.

Three of these players have already represented the All Whites, and it’s reported that Wellington-born winger Jesse Randall is a strong candidate for national coach Darren Bazeley’s squad for the OFC Nations Cup in Vanuatu next month.

Two more local players will be announced next week, aligning with the club’s deliberate strategy.

“It’s really important for us to have a Kiwi backbone,” said CEO Nick Becker. “It’s crucial for the fans and the club, and also for the foreign players joining us to see a team that is connected to the city and the country.”

Auckland FC is believed to have signed 14 players, with announcements to be staggered over the coming months. The full squad may not be finalized until August or September, ahead of the season starting in October, which is part of the start-up process.

This opportunity is significant, as shown by Howieson’s career. He started strong, joining Burnley FC as a teenager and later playing for St Mirren in Scotland. Returning home in 2016, he has become a dominant local figure, winning numerous national and regional trophies with Auckland City FC.

“I’m over the moon,” said Howieson. “This means a lot to me. I’ve been patient and I’m very grateful for this opportunity. I’ve waited a long time for this.”

The 29-year-old chose to stay close to his family despite overseas opportunities. It’s been challenging, balancing work, coaching, and evening training, but now his moment has arrived.

“I’m looking forward to morning training and having a structured schedule,” said Howieson.

Woud spent nearly nine years pursuing his career in England, Holland, and Japan but decided to return home.

“I want to get my career back on track, playing every week, and being with family and friends,” said Woud. “It’s a fresh start for me in a comfortable environment.”
