‘We need to get him on’: O’Neil urged to start Wolves ace who’s not played a single PL minute

Steve Bull, a Molineux veteran, feels Gary O’Neil should consider changing Wolves’ structure and starting Matt Doherty.

Wanderers have had a difficult start to the season.

With only three points from the first four games, there are early indications that this could be a challenging season.

However, there have been some hopeful instances, which O’Neil will highlight.

However, only one victory thus far may indicate the need for reform.

And Bull believes that restoring a back three – and beginning summer signing Doherty – is the way to go.

Wolves manager Steve Bull wants wing-backs back.
Bull believes that O’Neil should reconsider reverting to the method that Wolves were so successful with a few years ago.

Nuno Espirito Santo led Wolves to back-to-back seventh-place finishes in the Premier League.

And his deployment of a back three and wing-backs was crucial, as was a run to the FA Cup semi-finals and a Europa League quarter-final.

“Gary O’Neil is still dipping his toe in the water with the team at the moment, and it will take some time, but if it was up to me, I’d switch to a back three,” Bull stated.

“We’re getting caught off guard with a back four.” Doherty is on the bench as a wing-back, but he causes more difficulties in the opposing box than in ours, therefore he needs to come on.”

Doherty has yet to appear in the Premier League since his return to Wolves.

However, he did make his Carabao Cup debut against Blackpool and scored two goals.

Matt Doherty starting against Liverpool could be a good shout

Bull is not alone in believing that Doherty should now start for Wolves in the Premier League.

Nelson Semedo struggled against Crystal Palace last time out and is yet to build on his superb showing against Manchester United.

Wolves’ next game is against Liverpool, and a back three with wing-backs might not be such a bad idea.

And, with that in mind, it’s difficult to argue against Doherty starting.

He’s definitely better suited to that wing-back role than Semedo, and Wolves may benefit from a third center-half.
