Virginia Tech Football Practice Report: Pry And Babers To Reunite, Injuries & More

A week from Thursday, when Virginia Tech hosts Syracuse in Lane Stadium, Brent Pry and Dino Babers will face off as head coaches. However, they have already faced off once, on August 31, 2002.

Coming from Western

Powell-Ryland was the first Hokie since J.C. Price to record four sacks in a game.

Carolina, Pry was in his first season as a defensive coordinator on Rickey Bustle’s staff at Louisiana. When then-No. 23 Texas A&M hosted the Ragin’ Cajuns in the first game of the season, Babers was in his second (and last) season as the offense’s coordinator.

The performance broke records, but not in a good manner. In a 31-7 loss to the Aggies, Louisiana quarterback Jon Van Cleave threw six interceptions and the offense committed 10 turnovers. Texas A&M scored 31 points entirely as a result of errors.

The six interceptions from Louisiana arestill the most in a single game in Sun Belt history. Likewise, the 10 turnovers forced by the Aggies are still the most in a single game in Big 12 history.

Virginia Tech football: Antwaun Powell-Ryland receives award for his performance in win over Wake Forest

Powell-Ryland was the first Hokie since J.C. Price to record four sacks in a game.

Virginia Tech defensive end Antwaun Powell-Ryland was named ACC defensive lineman of the week for his performance in last week’s win over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.

Powell-Ryland had six tackles, including 4.5 for loss, four sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in the win. He now has seven sacks on the season, which leads the ACC.

Powell-Ryland, a Portsmouth, Va., native, played high school football at Indian River. He spent the first three seasons of his collegiate career at Florida before entering the transfer portal. He quickly became a top priority for head coach Brent Pry once he hit the portal.

Powell-Ryland is only the fourth player in school history to have four sacks in one game. Bruce Smith did it twice, Morgan Roane did it in 1985 and J.C. Price did it in 1995. Amazingly enough, Price is now Powell-Ryland’s position coach.

If Powell-Ryland maintains his current pace, he’d be the first Hokie since Darryl Tapp to record double-digit sacks in a single season.

Congratulations to Powell-Ryland.
