In today’s NFL, versatility is essential for standing out as a top defensive back, regardless of your position on the field. This has been particularly evident in the case of Josh Metellus from the Vikings.

Although officially listed as a safety, Metellus possesses a wide range of skills. Despite limited playing time in his initial three seasons after being drafted in the sixth round from Michigan in 2020, he truly came into his own in 2023. During that season, he showcased his abilities with three sacks, 29 total pressures, 86 solo tackles, and 45 stops.

Metellus has proven adept at covering receivers in various situations, from press coverage on short crossing routes to defending against deep vertical routes. Additionally, he excels in capitalizing on Brian Flores’ blitz strategies, whether by pressuring the quarterback or dropping back into coverage.
