North Carolina Tar Heels star RJ Davis has one big reason for why he returned for a fifth season in Chapel Hill – he wants to win a national championship.

The 6-foot Davis – who decided to return for an extra season rather than enter the NBA draft following an All-American year – attributes wanting to finish the job of leading the Tar Heels to a seventh National Championship as the primary reason upon returning.

Davis came close during the 2021-22 season when he helped lead North Carolina to a surprise National Championship game appearance after entering the tournament as an eighth seed.

They led by as many as 17 points in the title game before falling to the Kansas Jayhawks.

“Yeah, it was definitely a hard decision to make,” says Davis in an exclusive one-on-one interview. “Going into that decision, my mindset was really just focused on what I need, focused on what decision will make me feel at peace.

First and foremost, I haven’t won the National Championship. I’ve done a lot of great things this past year in terms of winning the ACC regular season, winning some individual awards.

My main goal going into college was for the national championship.”

Although the Tar Heels haven’t been back to the big game since, they did have a sensational season last year, entering the NCAA tournament as a No. 1 seed.

However, they fell to Alabama in a tight game in the Sweet 16, 89-87. It was a game in which Davis missed two shots with less than 25 seconds remaining with the Tar Heels trailing by just two points.
