Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Djed Spence’s loan move to Championship outfit Leeds United has gone through

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed defender Djed Spence has joined Championship side Leeds United on a season-long loan.

Spence, who spent the second half of last term with Ligue 1 outfit Rennes, joined Spurs last summer but has struggled for minutes in north London. Now, he has decided to make the temporary move to Elland Road in the hope of consistent game-time, with the Lilywhites now confirming the deal.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Djed Spence has joined Leeds United on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 season. Having joined us from Middlesbrough in July, 2022, the right-back has made six appearances in our colours to date.

“The England Under-21 international spent the second half of last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais alongside Joe Rodon and will now team up once again with the defender, who joined the Championship side earlier this month.”

Former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte revealed that it was the club, and not himself, who had targeted Spence following a hugely impressive 2021/22 loan stint with Nottingham Forest. When asked by football.london out on the club’s 2022 tour of South Korea what he had asked the club’s chairman Daniel Levy for in the transfer market, Conte admitted that bringing in the talented wingback was not originally his idea but that he was more than happy with greenlighting the arrival of the England U21 international.

“Honestly when I spoke [to Levy] it was very simple because at the start of the conversation the club was very clear with me and said we reached an important achievement and maybe it was very difficult to think since November when I arrived to go into the Champions League but now we want to continue to grow, to grow together with ambition,” said the Italian.

“Also, for the club, it’s not simple to go into the transfer market and sign players free like Perisic and Forster and sign players on loan like Lenglet, and to sign players with money like Richarlison and Bissouma and Spence. Spence is an investment of the club.

“The club wanted to do it. I said okay, this player is young but he showed he can become a good, important player for us. The club decided to buy him.”

Of course, since then Conte has left the club, with Ange Postecoglou appointed the club’s new head coach in June. The Australian has enjoyed a superb start to life in N17, overseeing two wins and a draw in his first three Premier League matches in charge of the north Londoners.
