Finding an impactful transfer in June is challenging, but there are still some intriguing defenders available.

Among the top defensive players left in the portal, three are safeties. Additionally, a fourth is a cornerback, and many of the next-best options are also defensive backs.

To identify the best remaining transfers, we considered past performance and recruiting ratings for less proven players. Early in a player’s college career, the potential can outweigh a lack of production.

Johnny Bowens III played sparingly at Oregon last season, recording two tackles in three games. However, as a 4-star prospect in the 2023 class, he should have plenty of options. According to On3, Texas is interested in bringing in Bowens, a 6’3″, 290-pound lineman from the Lone Star State. He finished his recruiting cycle ranked as the No. 186 overall player in the country.

Nigel Glover, another 4-star talent from the 2023 class, has already had an adventurous college journey. Initially enrolling at Northwestern, he entered the portal after the school fired Pat Fitzgerald and landed at Ohio State, where he took a redshirt. Now, he’s on the move again. Given last season’s circumstances, Glover may not be an immediate-impact transfer, but his recent recruiting pedigree makes him worth considering for the future.

Sometimes, a fresh start is necessary. Ceyair Wright, a top-100 prospect in the 2021 class, joined USC as a hometown player with immense potential. He earned a starting role in 2022, recording 27 tackles and one interception. Unfortunately, “personal reasons” sidelined him midway through the 2023 season, and he did not participate in spring practice. Wright entered the portal in April. While off-field issues can influence a transfer’s attractiveness, Wright is worth strong consideration if those issues aren’t prohibitive.
