Time for Orlando Pirates to sell R60 million talisman?

Orlando Pirates have decisions to make in the transfer window and could do worse than noting how Kaizer Chiefs sold a key man at a bad time.

Orlando Pirates should learn from recent mistakes made by Kaizer Chiefs and sell their talisman Monnapule Saleng to the highest bidder at the right time.

ORLANDO PIRATES DEPTH AS GOOD AS IT’S BEEN

The Buccaneers have strengthened their attacking midfield options with the arrivals of Katlego Otladisa, Patrick Maswanganyi, and Lesedi Kapinga. Obviously, Saleng’s 15 goals and 11 assists in 30 games last season was a ridiculous production for a winger, and it’s unlikely to be duplicated in the near future, but Jose Riveiro’s team must consider the broader picture here

LIFE AFTER SALENG?

Monnapule Saleng is, without a doubt, irreplaceable. Although there is no obvious alternative for his match-winning ability, the Pirates have the roster to make up for the goals lost if he leaves. Let’s not forget Kabelo Dlamini’s creative talents, who is back in shape. Zakhele Lepasa is also rising to the occasion, having already scored in double figures this season.

SALENG DESTINED FOR BIGGER THINGS

Monnapule Saleng will almost certainly move to Europe at some point in his career. Pirates might do worse than to facilitate that move as quickly as possible in order to maximize the revenue they reclaim for him. His worth is as high as it will ever be, and those dollars might be reinvested in a few top-tier local players. A €3 million (R60 million) offer would be difficult to turn down, and even for a club like Odense in Denmark, that’s little change.
