The No. 3 Texas Longhorns are in an intriguing position at the quarterback spot. Not only does Steve Sarkisian and company have one of the best starters in the sport in Quinn Ewers, they also have one of the most talked about backups in the country in Arch Manning.

The redshirt freshman made his first appearance of the year when he replaced Ewers in the season opener against Colorado State.

The game was already decided by that point with the Longhorns holding a 45-0 lead. But Manning made the most of his opportunity, connecting on a 3rd-and-goal pass for his first-career touchdown.

Ewers is in line for the starting job once Ewers declares for the NFL draft. In a world where talented backups are tempted to transfer for playing time, Manning’s decision to stay put may pay off in full down the road.Texas Legend Makes His Opinion on Arch Manning Extremely Clear - Athlon Sports

For Texas legend and former Longhorns quarterback, Colt McCoy, he sees a lot of ability in the latest Manning signal-caller and applauds his patience at Texas.

“I think Arch Manning is is the real deal, right,” McCoy said on “The Triple Option.” “I’ve spent some time with him. Obviously he’s got the last name, the pedigree, all those things. But the the kid works really, really hard.

He’s really smart, and I think you know it’s a credit to him for sticking around… really kind of buying his time to to be the starter at Texas.

” McCoy, who recently joined FOX Sports as a Big Ten analyst, went on to share some advice to young passers in today’s game.

He believes its best to stick with your initial destination and wait for your turn like what Manning has done in Austin.

“I just look at the quarterbacks that performed the best week one and across the board it seems like those are the guys that kind of waited their time,” McCoy said.

Texas is in for a battle this weekend as it heads to Ann Arbor to face defending national champion Michigan (No. 10). Kickoff is set for Saturday at noon ET (Fox).
