Skellefteå förlorade – mot brittiskt motstånd
Sheffield has become the new nightmare opponent for SHL teams in the Champions Hockey League.
After defeating Växjö Lakers 3–2 in overtime last weekend, it was now Skellefteå AIK’s turn to face the challenge. In their home arena, Utilita Arena, they lost to the British team 3–2, with Mark Simpson scoring the winning goal in the 14th minute of the second period.
Sheffield shocked the Swedish guests by taking a 2–0 lead just four minutes into the first period, with goals from Brandon Whistle and Joel Janatuinen putting Skellefteå on the back foot.
Junior player Zeb Lindgren managed to equalize for Skellefteå AIK after they regained their composure. Andreas Johnson scored to make it 1–2 after a rebound, and just over a minute later, Lindgren netted the equalizer with assists from Rickard Hugg and Rasmus Bergqvist.
However, their comeback wasn’t enough. The Sheffield team got the last laugh, surprising Skellefteå again in the second period. A long pass from their own zone set up Mark Simpson, who scored to make it 3–2, giving the Brits their third win in four matches in the Champions Hockey League.
With this defeat, Skellefteå now has two wins and two losses.
Both teams will have a break in the CHL, with the next round not taking place until October 8, when Skellefteå hosts Hungarian team Fehévár AV 19.
