‘It’s really tough’ – Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson opens up on the challenge facing Ryan Reynolds & Rob McElhenney’s team in the transfer window

Phil Parkinson has confessed that Wrexham face a “really tough” summer as they look to bolster their team ahead of their return to League Two.

What happened? Parkinson reveals that Wrexham are in talks with a number of players this summer but have yet to sign any. Having supervised the club’s National League title success, the Welsh manager insists that improving their team ahead of the Football League season will be a true struggle due to the quality of their starting XI.

WHAT THEY SAID: According to The Leader, Parkinson stated, “We have spoken to a number of players and are in contact with clubs.

“Like I keep saying, we have a good roster, and finding better players than the ones we already have is really difficult. If two or three players become available that we desire and believe will significantly improve the squad, we will go all out to get them.

“We have identified the clubs we want and are in talks with them, but at this time of year, things take time for a variety of reasons. Ideally, every manager wants the entire squad together before pre-season, but this seldom occurs.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney might fund a significant summer shopping spree, but they have already been turned down by two players. Jonny Williams decided not to join the club and instead transferred to Gillingham, although Charlton are close to signing fellow target Alfie May.

WHAT NEXT FOR WREXHAM? They play Manchester United and Chelsea in glitzy pre-season friendlies in the USA.
