The Jambos were defeated 1-0 by St Mirren in Paisley yesterday, leaving them with just two points from their first six league games. It’s also the second consecutive away setback for Dundee, who beat them at Dens Park last month, dropping Steven Naismith’s side to eighth in the table.

The Tynecastle fans have been outspoken about the club’s poor start to the season, with Naismith receiving some scathing criticism. Skipper Shankland admits the Gorgie players have not been good enough, lamenting a lack of consistency.

He told the BBC: “There’s a bit of pressure, but it’s a good pressure and we need to start accepting that. It’s a pressure to be good and go and win games.

“It’s better to have that pressure than to go into games knowing you’re going to get beaten, but it’s a sticky one.” It’s understandably aggravating.

“We just keep falling into this pattern of going up and down, up and down, and it’s not good.” If we are to get where we need to go, we must travel everywhere and take points away from home.”
