Sharp reflects on his time at Southampton and his contribution to the club’s return to the Premier League.

Due to his stint at Southampton earlier in his career, LA Galaxy striker Billy Sharp quipped that he is used to playing with Spanish-speaking players.

Billy Sharp is off to a fast start with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
The 37-year-old is a Sheffield United legend, but with his contract about to expire in the summer, there were concerns about his future.

Sharp wanted to stay at Bramall Lane, but a new contract couldn’t be reached as the Blades prepared to return to the Premier League, leaving him looking for a new club.

And, in an unexpected move, it was revealed that Sharp had relocated to the United States, signing a contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Even though it is early, Sharp has scored three goals in five games, but he has been a substitute in four of those outings, indicating how much of an impact he has made on the pitch.

Sharp makes a reference to Southampton’s history.
Of course, adjusting to life in MLS has been a tremendous change for Sharp, and one thing he hadn’t anticipated was the language barrier, given that the bulk of the club speaks Spanish.

However, when speaking to The Athletic, Sharp made a lighthearted reference to his time at Southampton to claim that he is used to it.

“It’s similar to when I was at Southampton; the changing room was very South American back then.” I don’t speak Spanish, but I get some of the words and humor. When I first sat down to eat my lunch at one of the tables, it was all in Spanish. ‘Do you want us to speak English?’ they asked, and I joked, ‘No, I understand what you’re saying.’

“They’ve all been fantastic. Going inside the changing room was strange for me because it had been the same for eight years, and I was the captain. It took two or three days, but a lot of the discussion and banter is the same.”

What was Billy Sharp’s performance like at Southampton?
The seasoned attacker has had a stellar career, and he will be best remembered for his time with his hometown club, Sheffield United. He did, however, make an impression at a number of other Football League clubs, notably Southampton.

Sharp contributed to Saints’ return to the Premier League by scoring key crucial goals. But opportunities in the Premier League were going to be scarce for the attacker, so he moved to Nottingham Forest.

Sharp would eventually receive his chance to make his impact at the highest level, as he captained the Blades to promotion, and he was a regular for Chris Wilder’s side as they finished in the top half, only to be relegated the following season.

What lies ahead for Southampton?
Russell Martin could use a prime Sharp in his attack right now, after three straight defeats and only scoring one goal!

It was a promising start to the new boss’s campaign, but recent results have been concerning. He will now demand a response when they play bottom-of-the-table Middlesbrough this weekend.
