Insider Predicts Stefon Diggs Won’t Be Happy With Move Bills Must Make
Stefon Diggs could present a significant decision for the Buffalo Bills this summer, and a source believes the wide receiver won’t be pleased with the choice the organization must make.
Diggs reached his breaking point little around the halfway mark of the 2023 season, despite having begun the year on track to have one of his best seasons to date. Diggs averaged just 41 yards per game throughout the final seven games of the season, including two playoff games, and failed to find the end zone once—the longest stretch of his career without a score.
Pro Football Talk’s Peter King forecasted that the Bills could have to ask the All-Pro receiver for some pay relief this offseason, which might not be a popular decision.
Bills’ contract with Stefon Diggs requires “major surgery.”
Given the team’s wage limit constraints, King projected that general manager Brandon Beane of the Bills will have to make some significant financial decisions this offseason, “maybe none bigger than what to do with Stefon Diggs.”
Diggs is thirty years old. He will have a $27.9 million cap hit the next season, which is highly expensive for a receiver who hasn’t had a 100-yard receiving day in the Bills’ previous 13 games, according to King. “Khalil Shakir actually had more receiving yards and touchdowns in the final ten weeks of the season than Dwight Diggs—and Josh Allen targeted Shakir on the biggest play of the season, Allen’s overthrow of him in the end zone near the end of the Kansas City playoff game.”
King went on to say that the Bills might have to ask Diggs for a pay adjustment of some sort.
“I anticipate that Diggs won’t be pleased about the Bills’ desire to make significant changes to his contract.
In recent years, the Bills have asked players for relief from the pay cap. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo revealed during the offseason that the organization reworked Nyheim Hines’ contract to turn a portion of his regular pay into a signing bonus. Hines was hurt in a jet-ski accident right before training camp began, so he had to miss the season even though he had the opportunity to get some money back through incentives.
Bills Are Still Entertaining for Stefon Diggs
Despite Diggs’ downturn, the Bills supported him; following the club’s playoff defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs, Beane stated that the organization still saw Diggs as their top receiver for 2024.
“Stef is our number one receiver. According to ESPN, Beane stated, “I firmly believe that, not wavering off of that.” “.. To prevent teams from bracketing him or, you know, locking him down in various ways to take him away, we must continue to have weapons available. They are aware that you will desire him. Stef is still capable of playing, and he would be the first to tell you if he could once more play with that deep ball. Because he is so competitive, he will put in a ton of work throughout the offseason. Even though there are many concerns about Stef’s performance or other factors, I still rank him as the top receiver.
