Kevin Muscat may be available for small compensation package in Rangers manager update

Rangers may be able to secure Kevin Muscat as their new manager with a small compensation package, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper reported on its website on Monday (2 October) that the Light Blues may be able to secure the Australian to be their next manager for a small fee of roughly two months’ wages to his current club Yokohama F Marinos.

Muscat has been offered a new contract with the J-League side but has held off on committing his future to the club as he was keeping one eye on Michael Beale’s situation at Ibrox and with his current deal expiring in a matter of weeks, Rangers would be able to secure his services on the cheap.

Discussing the state of the deal, Keith Jackson wrote: “The Yokohama F Marinos manager has been offered a new deal to stay in the J-League but held off on committing his future while Michael Beale was fighting a losing battle to remain in charge of Rangers.

“With only weeks to run on his current agreement, that means Muscat would be available for a knockdown compensation package of around two months wages’ should his former club make a move.

“He is now ready to answer the call if Rangers make an approach. It’s understood the Australian’s name has already made it onto a preliminary shortlist along with a number of other potential candidates.”

On the cheap

It is clear that Muscat is incredibly interested in this position to the point that he is eager to risk his future with his current employer in the hope that he could complete a return to Ibrox with Rangers and that eagerness cannot be ignored.

The Gers need somebody to come in who has a genuine drive and passion to turn around the fortunes of the Light Blues as so far this season it has been drab and lifeless in a manner that is inexcusable for a club that demands so much.

But those in charge at Ibrox cannot decide to appoint Muscat just because it can now be done on the cheap. They need to take their time to find the perfect candidate for the role and while saving money is never a bad thing for a football club, it cannot be the biggest factor.

Muscat’s career so far has shown that he is more than capable of leading teams to success and his CV has stark similarities to Ange Postecoglou who had so much success on the other side of Glasgow. Appointing him could well be a masterstroke from Rangers.

However, being a former player and a cheaper option does not make you the perfect candidate and after the situation became so messy under Beale, the Gers have to ensure they get this managerial search right.
