John McGinn ‘apologises’ to Unai Emery after Aston Villa blunder on live TV

Latest Aston Villa news from BirminghamLive as John McGinn speaks ahead of the Villans’ clash against Brighton

John McGinn has made a light-hearted apology to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery after seemingly revealing the position he will be playing against Brighton on Saturday.

The Villans captain has been played out of position recently due to the club’s injury situation. Villa were without a recognised left-back against Everton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday forcing midfielder McGinn to play in that position.

And when asked about playing at left-back in mid-week, he told TNT Sports: “I hadn’t played there since I was 17, but, we’ve obviously got a lot of injuries. I think that’s kind of went under the radar.

“Alex Moreno is struggling at the moment to come back. If we lose Lucas [Digne] we lose a big part of the team so the manager asked if I can fill in. I know the role. I know the responsibility and I was happy to just play wherever.

“It went alright. I think I played decent apart for the near-own goal but it was strange and I think the manager trusts me in different positions so as long as the park, I’m happy.

When asked if his comments meant he was playing inside-right against Brighton, he added in a light-hearted tone: “I’ve given that away. I apologise to the manager if he’s watching.”
