Offered ’24 RB Traevon Dunbar returns to Virginia Tech

2024 RB Traevon Dunbar visited Virginia Tech on Saturday

Running back Traevon Dunbar, a member of the Graniteville, South Carolina (Midland Valley) Class of 2024, spent last Saturday back in Blacksburg as Virginia Tech welcomed Wake Forest to Lane Stadium. The Virginia Tech offense outgained the Demon Deacons by more than 400 yards during Dunbar’s visit, which resulted in a 30-13 victory.

VTScoop’s Virginia Tech Football MVP: Week Seven vs. Wake Forest

VTScoop’s Virginia Tech Football MVP is back. The staff writers at VTScoop will perform a weekly section in which they will nominate their offensive and defensive players for the week. The two athletes who have received the most nominations for votes before the end of the season will be declared the winners. Based on the final results, we will also name the season’s overall MVP. Evan G. Watkins, Doug Bowman, Andrew Alix, Kolby Crawford, and I, Matej Sis, are participants in the VTScoop. We’ll make thoughtful nominations for our MVPs every week. There will be clear-cut weeks and interesting discussions, too.

Virginia Tech took down Wake Forest 30 to 13 at home. Here are our picks for Week 7:

Jaylin Lane is a close second, but Drones must win this. The Hokies’ offensive coordinator had a strong day and deserves to be named the week’s MVP.

Drones, who was rated as the No. 4 quarterback nationally for Week 7, delivered a complete performance. Drones’ passing game was effective and efficient, and he benefited from his wide receivers exploiting weaknesses in the Wake Forest defense. He made good development with his reads and appeared to be at ease in the RPO game, consistently making the appropriate decisions. It also helps that he was able to distribute the ball to other playmakers after failing to make a catch against Florida State. A resounding victor for MVP this week.

APR was supposed to play well against a porous WF offensive line. He managed to rack up four sacks, 4.5 tackles for loss, one forced turnover, and one fumble recovery, which surprised me. He deserves to be named ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week because of how unstoppable he was on Saturday. Don’t look now, but his four solo sacks put him among the Top-5 in the nation. Thank you.

I’m not going to add too much here. It was as methodical of a 300-yard effort as you’ll see, which is a good thing.

This was the kind of pass-rushing performance Tech had to have against a weak Wake offensive line, but it’s also the kind of pass-rushing performance the Hokies have been searching for over the last few seasons.

Kyron Drones is more than just serviceable. And when he’s playing in an offensive scheme focused on maximizing his talents, he has the potential to be great. We’ve seen that twice in the last three outings for Virginia Tech.

The mid season shift to a Drones-centric offense is a recent development. The bye week affords Tyler Bowen extra time to further expand the playbook and build on the concepts that have been working with Drones under center. That’s great news for a player whose trend line was already headed in the right direction. Not saying there won’t be a bump or two in the road, but I envision quite a few more MVPs in this young quarterback’s future.

4 sacks in a game. The box score speaks for itself. Seven games into this thing, APR has consistently lived up to his billing. As he continues to gain experience in the defensive scheme, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him make the opposing quarterback’s life miserable on a regular basis. The transfer portal may be an imperfect science, but it looks like Brent Pry found himself an edge rusher to build this defense around.

No justification is necessary for this one. Drones is coming into his own at the helm of this offense, and produced another explosive performance passing for 321 yards and two touchdowns. He also led the team in rushing with 59 yards good for 3.9 yards per carry. Every week it seems Drones becomes more comfortable in the offense and his confidence blossoms. A week off will be great for the young quarterback to rest and prepare for the Syracuse Orangemen.

Another easy selection here. With four sacks in the game and a forced fumble, APR now leads the ACC in both of these statistical categories. Powell-Ryland has proven to be a massive get out of the portal for this staff, and a big charge for this defense that was severely lacking a season ago in getting to the quarterback.
