Northampton Town won their first League One game in four after defeating Exeter City 2-0.

Sam Hoskins gave the Cobblers the lead in the first half, but a late counter-attack goal by Patrick Brough gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage.

Northampton’s victory was their first in September, following three league defeats and a midweek loss on penalties in the EFL Trophy, and they finish the month in 17th place in the table.

The Cobblers arrived in Devon having suffered three consecutive defeats against an Exeter team that began the day in the top six and had pulled off an upset win against Luton Town in the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Northampton, on the other hand, settled well into the game and came close to scoring when Vili Sinisalo denied Hoskins after he met Mitch Pinnock’s cross.

Hoskins, on the other hand, would not be denied for long, as the Cobblers captain took Shaun McWilliams’ through-pass and beat Sinisalo to score.

Exeter began to provide more, with Sonny Cox shooting wide from a good position before Yanic Wildschut was denied by Lee Burge.

Northampton started the second half strongly, with Sinisalo again denying Hoskins, Alex Hartridge making a last-ditch stop to deny McWilliams, and Sinisalo then making saves to deny Louis Appere and Kieran Bowie.

Exeter attempted to equalize, but the game’s second goal would extend Northampton’s lead, when Tyreece Simpson and Bowie combined to set up Brough to finish.

Northampton’s win was their first since beating Cheltenham at the end of August, and Jon Brady’s side will look to make it back-to-back victories when they host Reading on Tuesday night.
