Charlton’s response to late Derby County transfer highlights a new Addicks priority

Corey Blackett-Taylor was seemingly in demand this summer

The final day of the summer transfer window proved to be rather busy one at Charlton Athletic.

In the end, four new players were recruited to The Valley’s first-team roster on deadline day, while two more were loaned out.

However, it appears that the Addicks’ last hours before the market closed could have been much more exciting had some negotiations gone differently.

According to The South London Press, Charlton rejected bids for several of its players in the closing days of the transfer window.

Corey Blackett-Taylor, a winger, was reportedly one of those who drew interest, with League One rivals Derby County understood to have turned down an attempt for the 25-year-old.

Charlton made the correct decision in relation to Derby’s interest in Blackett-Taylor.

Given the circumstances, it appears that Charlton took the correct decision in refusing to authorise a move to Pride Park for Blackett-Taylor.

Blackett-Taylor has been a significant player for the Addicks since signing in the summer of 2021, scoring 11 goals and giving nine assists in 75 appearances across all competitions, emphasizing his importance to the club going ahead.

Indeed, the 25-year-old has started every single one of Charlton’s six league games this season, lending credence to the notion that he is a vital member of this squad.

As a result, it would be difficult for Charlton to let him go when he still appears to have a significant role to play at The Valley, especially given that permitting him to join Derby would boost a League One opponent.

You get the impression that the Addicks wanted some continuity in their wide areas by keeping Blackett-Taylor, with Jesurun Rak-Sakyi returning to Crystal Palace after a successful loan spell last season, and Diallang Jayisemi himself departing on another season-long loan, this time to St Johnstone.

While this suggests that Charlton did the right thing by keeping Blackett-Taylor, it also appears to leave them with another problem now that the transfer window has closed.

Charlton is concerned about Blackett-Taylor’s contract predicament.
As things currently stand, Blackett-Taylor is in the final year of his current contract at The Valley, which puts further pressure on Charlton to respond to any potential interest in the winger.

If no new deal is reached between the club and the player, the January transfer window will be Charlton’s last chance to obtain a fee for the sale of Blackett-Taylor.

Given their apparent reluctance to let him go after rejecting Derby’s approach, the idea that they may be forced to accept a lower fee for him in January, when they will undoubtedly want to obtain something for him, will be a source of concern.

Clubs will be aware of Blackett-Taylor’s status, and given the interest shown in him, it would be surprising if sides did not try to sign him again in January or when he is available for free in the summer, in order to put Charlton to the test.

As a result, it appears that a new deal for the 25-year-old must be on The Valley’s agenda in order to assure his future.
