Newcastle United evening headlines as Magpies close in on next transfer after Lewis Hall deal

A wrap up of all of the latest Newcastle United headlines

Here are your Newcastle United evening headlines on Monday, August 21.

Newcastle closing in on another transfer on top of Lewis Hall move as recruitment drive continues

Newcastle United’s summer of senior recruitment may be coming to an end but the Magpies continue to strengthen the club’s academy and youth departments with shrewd moves for Europe’s brightest talent.

Chelsea’s Lewis Hall, 18, will become Newcastle’s fourth, and potentially final, first-team signing despite his inexperience, but another youngster is on the way in the form of Inter Milan’s Kevin Zefi. The attacker, also 18, is poised to swap the youth ranks at the San Siro for a switch to St James’ Park before the end of the month.

Zefi’s arrival will follow the capture of fellow Irishman Cathal Heffernan, 18, who put pen to paper on a Newcastle deal last week after leaving AC Milan. Both youngsters are seen as two of Ireland’s best up and coming prospects in the years to come.

Jurgen Klopp reveals that Liverpool will ‘talk to the authorities’ before Newcastle game

Jurgen Klopp has revealed that Liverpool will speak to the ‘authorities’ ahead of the weekend’s game against Newcastle United to see if Alexis Mac Allister’s ban can be overturned.

Mac Allister was sent off before the hour mark of Liverpool’s 3-1 win against Bournemouth last Saturday following a challenge on Ryan Christie. The block tackle lacked any real force – even Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola admitted it ‘did not look like a red’ – as both players went for the ball.

However, Mac Allister did catch Christie’s shin with his left boot so referee Thomas Brammall gave the midfielder his marching orders. The decision was not overturned by VAR, but Klopp hinted that Liverpool will appeal Mac Allister’s three-match ban after the game.

Otherwise, Liverpool will be looking particularly light in the middle of the park, with new signing Wataru Endo in line to make his full debut against Newcastle on Sunday – less than 10 days after joining the club from Stuttgart.

“The amount of times I have been asked about it shows already it is worth discussing it again, which we will probably do,” Klopp told reporters. “I asked Macca and he said, ‘I touched him but not really’. OK. Good.

“That was all he told me and, after the game, I saw it back and if you have a list of points of what we need to give a red card, besides contact, no other boxes are ticked in that moment. It’s a decision where I think we all agree if he gives a yellow card, VAR would not overturn it and he gave a red card and VAR is not overturning it because the contact means there is no clear and obvious mistake blah blah blah.

“The punishment of 40 minutes with 10 men in that battle is already punishment enough, but let’s see. I don’t know. We have to talk to the authorities.”

Adidas did not give up hope of nine-figure Newcastle reunion even after lost kits never seen

They were kits that never saw the light of day. A set of designs that were going to take Newcastle United’s partnership with Adidas in a ‘different direction’ – only for the Magpies to switch to Puma in 2010.

However, senior figures at Adidas, many of whom were working at the sportswear giant at the time, never ruled out a reunion, particularly after the takeover. In fact, it was only seven months into the new era that Inigo Turner, Adidas’ design director, told ChronicleLive: “It was a bit of a shame because I felt we were developing nicely with Newcastle and, then, unfortunately, it wasn’t continued, but who knows what happens in the future?”

Who knows, indeed. The secret is already out, but Newcastle are set to announce a nine-figure deal with Adidas next week, which will be the biggest in the club’s history, and significantly boost commercial revenues. It feels like a statement of not only where Newcastle are as a Champions League club, joining Real Madrid, Bayern Munich et al in the Adidas stable, but also where the Magpies are going, which is what Europe’s largest sportswear manufacturer looks for in prospective partners.
