New York Mets starting pitcher Kodai Senga will be sidelined until after the All-Star break for the 2024 season due to a strained posterior capsule in his right shoulder, as confirmed by Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. Although there is hope for Senga to begin throwing bullpens soon, his return to the mound is expected to be delayed.

Senga, 31, made his MLB debut last year after an impressive career spanning 11 years in Japan. He delivered a notable performance with a 12-7 record, a 2.98 ERA, and 202 strikeouts over 29 starts for the Mets in his rookie season. Senga’s outstanding performance earned him an NL All-Star appearance and placed him as the runner-up for NL Rookie of the Year.

Currently in London for a series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Senga is engaging in long toss sessions as part of his rehabilitation process, according to Mendoza.

The Mets, who are 27-35 entering Saturday’s game, will be without Senga’s pitching prowess for at least six more weeks, until after the All-Star break ends on July 19. Despite his absence, pitchers like Luis Severino (3.25 ERA) and Sean Manaea (3.63 ERA) have performed well in holding down the rotation.

Senga’s absence has been a significant setback for the Mets, as he was expected to play a key role as the team’s ace this season. However, with the National League showing a lackluster performance overall, the Mets remain within striking distance of a playoff spot. If they can maintain their position until Senga’s return, there is still hope for a postseason run.
