Rangers coach praises forgotten man after transfer collapse

Rangers manager Neil Banfield hailed Scott Wright’s performance against Motherwell on Sunday.

The Gers returned to the Scottish Premiership on Sunday after defeating Real Betis in the Europa League.

The elation of that victory was swiftly deflated, though, as Rangers delivered another dismal performance.

Michael Beale’s team did win 1-0 thanks to a Cyriel Dessers goal, but the performance was disappointing once again.

At full time, Rangers fans booed the players, making it obvious that these performances aren’t good enough.

Scott Wright is given a chance to face Motherwell.
Fans were perplexed when the starting lineup was announced, with forgotten man Scott Wright picked to the XI.

Wright was anticipated to leave the Rangers this summer, but a couple of prospective deals fell through.

Preston North End had an offer turned down before a deal to Turkish club Pendikspor fell through.

That left Beale with a choice: keep Wright out until January or try to get back into the squad.

The 26-year-old had not kicked a ball for Rangers since a two-minute cameo against Servette on August 9th.

Nonetheless, he was starting against Motherwell, with Beale oddly using him in midfield in a 3-5-2 style due to Rabbi Matondo’s injury.

Matondo is now expected to be out for six weeks, which might provide Wright with a regular return to the Rangers lineup.

Wright has more than 18 months left on his contract, but it’s difficult to see him staying at Ibrox for much longer.

Wright is still being lauded, with Rangers assistant Neil Banfield praising his performance against Motherwell.

Banfield told Rangers Review that injuries simply create opportunities for other players, such as Wright.

Wright performed ‘outstandingly well’ for Rangers on Sunday, according to Banfield, who believes his return to play is ‘fantastic’ as he no doubt seeks further opportunities.

“Scott Wright came on at the weekend and did outstandingly well for the team, so it’s great for him,” Banfield stated.
