Nazariy Rusyn injury latest, Sunderland’s view on him and what fans can expect after permanent transfer

New Sunderland signing Nazariy Rusyn has arrived on Wearside following his move from Ukrainian club Zorya Luhansk.

Nazariy Rusyn, the new Sunderland signing, is eligible to make his debut against QPR this weekend, but what can fans expect?

On transfer deadline day, a deal was reached for the 24-year-old to join Sunderland from Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk, but Rusyn had to pass his physical in Paris while awaiting a visa and permission to enter England.

After completing his move to Wearside for an unknown price, the striker has since landed in the North East.

Rusyn had missed Zorya Luhansk’s previous three games due to a groin injury before joining Sunderland, but he recently stated that he was recovering and ‘feeling better every day.’

Here’s what we know about his situation:

Will Rusyn be ready to play against QPR?

While Rusyn has been recovering from an injury, Ukrainian media says that the striker has overcome his recent setback.

“Rusyn arrived at the location of his new club, Sunderland, with whom he signed a four-year contract,” according to sport.ua. Rusyn is no longer hampered by groin pain and can train with the rest of the team.”

What Sunderland fans can expect

Rusyn had 13 goals and six assists in 30 league appearances for Zorya Luhansk during the 2022/23 season, his greatest season yet.

When asked about the player’s key strengths and weaknesses, Ukrainian football journalist Andrew Todos told the Echo:

“He has a great eye for goal and can beat players with the ball at his feet.” His first-time finish is also impressive.

“He’s not the fastest player, but he makes good use of the pace he has.”

“He can practice making decisions in both passing and finishing. He should be more consistent in that regard.”

On Rusyn’s move to England, he added: “I would say it’s a very good move for him and it’s come at the right time in his career. There’s even still time for him to develop ahead of his prime.

c the Championship, somewhere like Belgium or France might have been somewhere I could visualise him playing. “

Sunderland’s view

While Rusyn does have senior experience, it may take some time for him to adapt to a new country.

Still, there are likely to be opportunities in Sunderland’s forward line this season, especially after Ross Stewart’s move to Southampton.

Sunderland’s sporting director Kristjaan Speakman stated of Rusyn’s ability and potential, “We’re trying to find players for the team and sometimes to maybe be the next one in the team, but sometimes players can surprise you both ways.”

“We still think he’s up and coming to some extent; he’s a late bloomer, but he’s had some really strong performances over the last 18-24 months.”

“We certainly expect him to come here and, with some adaptation, be able to impact the team and be a key player for us.” That’s what we’ve seen in his games, and we believe he can offer.”
