The New York Mets had a hectic Friday morning.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported various roster changes the Mets were implementing.

First, right-handed pitcher Christian Scott and third baseman Brett Baty were being sent down to Triple-A. Additionally, catcher Omar Narváez was designated for assignment.

Veteran shortstop Jose Iglesias was called up to replace Baty, and the Mets acquired catcher Luis Torrens in a trade with the New York Yankees.

Scott, 24, has been a standout in the Mets’ rotation this season with a 3.90 ERA, 25 strikeouts, and just six walks over five starts. He will continue in Triple-A.

Baty, 24, has struggled in the MLB, hitting .225/.304/.325 this year with four home runs and 16 RBIs. Last season, he hit .212/.275/.323 with nine home runs and 34 RBIs in 108 games.

With Baty’s demotion, Mark Vientos will take over as the full-time third baseman.

Narváez, 32, is being DFA’d after hitting .154/.191/.185 in 28 games, marking the worst season of his nine-year career. The Mets opted for Torrens as their backup catcher, acquiring him for $100,000. Torrens, 28, played in 18 games with the Cubs and Mariners in 2023, hitting .250/.300/.357. In Triple-A with the Yankees, he hit .279 with five home runs and 19 RBIs.

Iglesias, 34, last played in the MLB in 2022 with the Rockies. Signed by the Mets in December, he hit .273/.309/.442 with seven home runs and 29 RBIs in Triple-A. He will primarily contribute with his defense.

These roster changes come during a turbulent week for the Mets. The team DFA’d reliever Jorge López after an incident where he threw his glove into the stands and made controversial postgame comments.

Recently, superstar shortstop Francisco Lindor made critical remarks about the Mets, and two weeks ago, owner Steve Cohen stirred up the fanbase with a since-deleted tweet about the team’s future.

The Mets have had a challenging season so far, hoping for a turnaround in June. They ended May with a 23-33 record, trailing the first-place Philadelphia Phillies by 15.5 games in the NL East.
