THE LATEST SPORT NEWS
Life can be odd and full of surprises, as I discovered again this week.
To deal with the rising weather and humidity, I was doing some research for an article and came across a name that looked familiar, but I wasn’t sure whether there was any link, or if it was just a case of 2+2=5?
After putting it on the back burner for a couple of hours, I had to go back and see if Alwyn Scott McGuffie, who played for Luton Town between 1954 and 1964, was the same person who managed a Toy Shop I frequented as a kid.
The Toy Shop in question was on Marsh Road in Leagrave, a twenty-minute drive away.
Looking for an explanation, I found it on the wonderful Hatters Heritage website, which proved that once his Hatters career ended, Alwyn did, in fact, take over control of the very same Toy Shop I visited.
But, from my recollections, my late father never once disclosed Alwyn’s Luton Town link to me, despite the fact that my father attended Kenilworth Road on a regular basis and knew I spent my pocket money there.
Also, I don’t recall seeing any Luton memorabilia in Alwyn’s shop.
Unfortunately, according to the information available, Alwyn returned to Scotland and died in 2015.
I don’t know what business the shop houses these days because I live on the other side of town, near the airport, but I’m eager to return to Marsh Road soon to find out.
Do any of our readers remember Alwyn McGuffie from his time with the Hatters?
If that’s the case, do you have any recollections to share?
