Former Manchester United defender ready to ‘do the business’ at Luton Town

Centre half determined to prove himself with the Hatters

Luton has a new signing. Teden Mengi is ready to ‘do the business’ after agreeing to join the Hatters from his boyhood club Manchester United last week.

Mengi came up through the ranks at Old Trafford, joining the academy at the age of six and went on to spend 15 years with the Red Devils before making the move to Town for an unknown fee ahead of the transfer window closing.

He previously had two loan periods, going to Derby County and Birmingham City when both were in the Championship, but injuries limited him to just 18 games during that time.

Mengi now wants to begin what he hopes would be a new chapter in his life in Bedfordshire, as he said on the club’s website: “My loan spells gave me a taste of men’s football, and I got a good taste of men’s football.”

“It didn’t end the way I wanted it to, but that’s life, and I’m ready to do business now.”

“It’s a little sad that I’m leaving somewhere I’ve called home for a long time in my career, but I’m really excited to be here and start the next stage of my career.”

“I’ve seen people come and go, my age group has shrunk and shrunk, and I was the last one there.”

“It’s a sad time, but also a very exciting time.”

Mengi also piqued the interest of the national team during his time with the Red Devils, appearing for England at U15 to U20 levels before being handpicked to practice with the senior squad in October 2021.

He went on to say, “It was really good, I remember someone was ill, Gareth (Southgate) just asked for me.”

“Training with the best players in England or with English nationality was a surreal experience.”

“It was a great experience and a great learning experience, and I learned a lot from that day.”

Town have began their first Premier League season with three consecutive defeats, as they have naturally struggled to adjust to life in the top division after winning the Championship play-off final last season.

Despite the fact that he has only recently arrived at the Brache and has yet to play in English football’s highest league, with his two senior United appearances coming from the bench in the Champions League and Europa League, Mengi is already optimistic about what his new team can achieve, saying: “I can’t wait, I’ve met all the lads, a great set of lads.”

“I think we’ve got a really good chance if we just stick together and stay with each other throughout the season.”

Finally, when asked what Town fans can expect from him in a Hatters jersey, Mengi replied, “Football’s all I’ve ever really known, the Man United away, I’m a footballing centre back.”

“Luton fans can expect energy, pace, aggression, and good football from me,” he says.
