Leeds United: Neco Williams wowed by Ethan Ampadu v Cardiff amid January transfer updates

Neco Williams has sent a message to Ethan Ampadu following the 3-0 Leeds United win v Cardiff City on 13 January amid rumours he could be on their list of potential January transfer deals.

The Nottingham Forest full-back responded to his Welsh international teammate following the victory, forcing fans to question whether his future could lie at Elland Road.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay [11 January] reported that Williams has been mentioned in transfer discussions at Leeds, although Forest are unlikely to sanction an exit.

Taking to Instagram following the win on 13 January, Ampadu posted: “Big W on the road”, to which Williams replied: “Oh my skip” with an eye emoji – a reference to Ampadu captaining the Leeds side.

Speculation is rife

The comment from Williams referring to Ampadu as “my skip” was almost certainly due to their Welsh connection, but that won’t stop fans from speculating given the recent transfer rumours and Ampadu stepping up to captain Leeds of late.

After Luke Ayling joined Middlesbrough on loan for the rest of the season, with his contract set to expire in the summer, the Yorkshire club have been searching for a new right-back, and a deal to bring Williams to Elland Road would make sense.

There is already a core of Welshmen in the spine of Leeds’ team, with Ampadu joined by Joe Rodon and Daniel James, so adding Williams to the mix would be a seamless transition for the full-back who already has friends in the team.

However, the news that Forest are unlikely to sanction a deal puts a dampener on the jubilant mood and the speculation surrounding a potential deal.

Williams has started just four games for Forest this year and came off the bench in both of Nuno Espirito Santo’s games as manager so far.
