Leeds now want 23-year-old that Jose Mourinho said is ‘quality’, but has a lot to learn

Leeds United are reportedly eyeing a move to sign Roma star Ola Solbakken before Friday’s deadline in case Willy Gnonto or Luis Sinisterra go – and Jose Mourinho thinks he is “quality”, but has a lot to learn.

Solbakken, 24, only joined Roma in January after the Norway star scored three goals against Mourinho’s side during the 2021-22 Conference League. He scored on his debut, but has only managed 15 outings.

The Mail report that Sinisterra and Gnonto could still go with clubs considering a late move for the Elland Road stars. Leeds have opened talks with £4m-rated Solbakken in case either of the two stars do leave.

It is unclear if Roma want to sell him and if Solbakken is open to leaving Roma for a second-tier side. Speaking this year after Solbakken’s arrival, Mourinho said he has “quality” but needs to learn tactically.

“He doesn’t understand tactics in the same way. He doesn’t know difference between 5-3-2 and 3-4-1-2, or a high press. He must learn how to play with us. Has quality, but he can’t just replace someone.”

Leeds eyeing Solbakken: Mourinho said he has a lot to learn

Solbakken would be a good signing, especially at a bargain fee of just £4m. Roma signed the Norway ace on a free from Bodo/Glimt. So, any fee for him is a profit for Roma. They may be open to his sale.

However, the biggest question mark regarding a move – other than the future of Sinisterra and Gnonto – is Solbakken’s stance. Even if he is only on the bench at Roma, would he want to swap Roma for Leeds?

It seems unlikely. But, he is a top player and if Leeds can get him then we should. But as things stand, it all depends on any late interest and subsequent bids for Sinisterra and Gnonto. One to keep an eye on.
