The recent signing of tight end Robert Tonyan by the Minnesota Vikings on May 16, alongside Sammie Reyes signed on May 13, indicates a proactive approach by the team in response to the potential absence of Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson during the regular season due to knee surgery recovery.

With the addition of Tonyan and Reyes, the Vikings now have seven tight ends heading into training camp. Last season, the team initially included four tight ends on their 53-man roster after training camp, a number that would need to accommodate Hockenson’s inclusion regardless of his Week 1 readiness.

While Hockenson is slated for the initial 53-man roster, the possibility remains that he could be placed on either the injured reserve (IR) or physically unable to perform (PUP) lists, forcing him to miss a minimum of four games from the season’s start. Hockenson played a crucial role in the Vikings’ offense last season, tallying 95 receptions for 960 yards and five touchdowns following his four-year, $68.5 million extension.

Reyes, a talented athlete who returned from retirement to join the Vikings, was not expected to directly challenge the roster spots of Josh Oliver, Johnny Mundt, or Nick Muse. However, Tonyan presents a different scenario.

The former Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears tight end has had a successful career despite going undrafted in 2017, boasting chemistry with running back Aaron Jones, another recent Vikings signing.

Tonyan’s signing positions him as a strong contender for the final roster, while undrafted rookie Trey Knox may find himself vying for a practice squad spot in his debut professional season.

Regarding Hockenson’s rehabilitation progress, a report by The Athletic’s Alec Lewis earlier this month indicated that he is ahead of schedule. However, the Vikings remain cautious about rushing him back onto the field, prioritizing his full recovery given his status as a cornerstone player, as affirmed by his previous contract. The recent roster moves by the Vikings align with this cautious approach, ensuring they are prepared in case Hockenson misses time during the regular season.
