The Impact: Wright’s departure on the bowl game, future offense

What is the impact of Daequan Wright entering the Transfer Porta

With Virginia Tech tight end Daequan Wright planning to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when the window officially opens on Monday, he will essentially walk away from Virginia Tech football, which includes participating in the upcoming bowl game, which will be announced on Sunday.

Virginia Tech received bowl eligibility after defeating in-state rival Virginia, 55-17, last Saturday in Charlottesville.

With Virginia Tech’s offense relying on the tight end unit, how can Tyler Bowen address the absence of Wright in December? What about next season?

A look at Virginia Tech’s latest bowl projections going into

On Sunday, Virginia Tech’s football team will find out where they are spending the postseason after securing a bowl bid following their 55-17 defeat over in-state rival Virginia last weekend.

Virginia Tech finished the regular season with a 6-6 record, marking a large improvement over last season’s 3-8 record.

The 2023 bowl season will mark the first bowl appearance for Virginia Tech under the direction of Brent Pry and all fans want to know where the Hokies will suit up for their final game of the season and who will they face.

conference championship weekend

Earlier today, I spent a few minutes doing the leg work so that you don’t have to and compiled a list of what many of the industry experts are saying just a few days away from selection Sunday.

Jerry Palm

Brad Crawford, 247Sports – Fenway Bowl vs. UTSA – Dec 28

Brett McMurphy, Action Network – Dukes Mayo Bowl vs. Kentucky – Dec 27

, CBS Sports – Military Bowl vs. SMU – Dec 27

The majority of the projections have Virginia Tech playing in the 2023 Military Bowl in Annapolis, MD, on December 27. The opponent varies in the projections from SMU, to Memphis, to UTSA, but the majority believe that Virginia Tech will represent the ACC in the Military Bowl next month.

Of the Military Bowl predictions, SMU seems to be the trending opponent in the experts cataloged above. Recently, SMU accepted an invitation to join the ACC, along with California and Stanford, in 2024.

Two of the experts – Brett McMurphy and Mak Schlabach – see Virginia Tech back in the Dukes Mayo Bowl, previously the Belk Bowl, against a former opponent in Kentucky. Virginia Tech and Kentucky matched up in the 2019 Belk Bowl. Kentucky defeated Virginia Tech 37-30.

The two outliers of the experts above is Brad Crawford of 247Sports who projected Virginia Tech to the Fenway Bowl against UTSA and ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura who sees Virginia Tech heading to San Diego for the DirectTV Holiday Bowl against Oregon State.

Along with where Virginia Tech will play its post-season contest is who will be available to play. Virginia Tech has already seen two players announce their intentions to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal and there are certainly more names to come before the Hokies take to the field sometime in December.
