Southampton have been struck an early setback for their match against Leeds United later this month.

After receiving a straight red card in Friday night’s 4-1 loss to Leicester City, winger Kamaldeen Sulemana is poised to miss the meeting between the two prospective promotion contenders.

It was another dreadful 90 minutes for the Saints, who were thrashed 5-0 against Sunderland before the international break.

Southampton have been handed an early setback ahead of their match against Leeds United later this month.

Winger Kamaldeen Sulemana is poised to miss the encounter between the two prospective promotion contenders after receiving a straight red card in Friday night’s 4-1 loss to Leicester City.

The Saints were thrashed 5-0 against Sunderland just before the international break.

Southampton have now surrendered 16 goals in their first six matches under Russell Martin, with Sulemana’s late red card adding to their woes at St. Mary’s.

Sulemana was making his first appearance of the season after returning from injury, but he had a horrible evening as his wayward ball was responsible for Leicester’s fourth goal, before being sent off in stoppage time.

Sulemana will miss Southampton’s game against Leeds.

Sulemana will be forced to miss Southampton’s next three games, the third of which is against Leeds at the end of the month, due to the nature of the red card.

He will also miss Tuesday’s home game against Ipswich Town, as well as next weekend’s away trip to bottom-of-the-table Middlesbrough.

However, according to journalist Alfie House, Russell Martin is attempting to appeal the dismissal, and if successful, he will be back in contention.

The red card was, admittedly, a touch severe, and it would not be surprising if the decision was reversed.

Sulemana is anticipated to be a key player for Southampton this season, despite the fact that his £30 million price put some interested clubs off buying him in the summer.
