Let’s give a warm welcome to our new star.

It took the New York Mets some time to finalize their MLB roster for the 2024 season. Initially, they made cost-effective moves in the MLB free agency, but unfortunately, these signings didn’t pan out as expected.

David Stearns made significant acquisitions during the offseason, but the supplementary signings could have been easily replaced by minor league talents.

1) The Mets opted for Joey Wendle to bolster their defensive strategy. He was among the first signings on November 30, occupying a roster spot that could have been utilized for a stronger third baseman like Gio Urshela, who later signed with the Detroit Tigers for $500K less than Wendle’s $2 million contract with the Mets.

Wendle’s tenure with the Mets concluded on May 20, marked by underwhelming offensive and defensive performances, making his departure inevitable.

Instead of Wendle, the Mets could have considered signing Jose Iglesias, a seasoned infielder who has quickly shown his value and enthusiasm within the team. Although it’s early to assess his full potential, Iglesias has already demonstrated a positive clubhouse presence and seems to gel well with the team’s dynamics. Unlike Wendle, Iglesias appears more comfortable under the spotlight, adding a beneficial dimension to the team chemistry.
