“Good business” – Carlton Palmer urges QPR to finalise transfer deal for free agent

Carlton Palmer believes QPR should bring Chris Martin back to the club.

HIGHLIGHTS

  •  QPR is in talks to re-sign Chris Martin, a big striker who played a significant role in helping the team retain their Championship status last season.
  •  Martin’s return would be a low-risk move for QPR as he is familiar with the club and has proven to be a threat in attack.
  •  QPR is looking to strengthen their squad to ensure survival this season and Martin’s experience and character could benefit the team both on and off the pitch.

Carlton Palmer believes that QPR would be making a smart signing if they bring Chris Martin back to the club.

QPR in talks to re-sign Chris Martin

The powerful striker joined the R’s earlier this year in February, committing to a contract until the conclusion of last season as the Londoners fought to stay in the league.

Martin also contributed significantly to QPR’s Championship survival, scoring four goals in 16 appearances and having a positive influence off the field.

However, with his contract expiring in the summer, Martin confirmed his departure.

However, it has been clear for some time that a return is possible, with the club in talks with the player over new terms as they attempt to bolster Gareth Ainsworth’s squad outside of the transfer market.

So there is still hope for a deal, and Palmer told FLW that it would be a good addition for QPR.

“Chris Martin, 34, is a Championship veteran. He’d be a welcome addition to the squad; he appeared in 16 games last season, scoring four goals, one of which came against Burnley, gaining them a crucial point that helped them survive.

“If the right deal can be struck for both parties, it would be good business as QPR strives to survive again in this season.”

Would this be a good signing for QPR?

Most would agree with Palmer’s assessment here, as it appears to be a low-risk transfer for QPR, as Martin is available, understands the club, and would provide another attacking threat.

Even at 34, he has demonstrated that he is still a threat at this level, as he has the physicality to lead the line, the ability to win free-kicks, and, most importantly, the ability to score goals when given the chance.

Of course, in a perfect world, you wouldn’t rely on someone that young to be your primary man, but that isn’t the case with QPR, as Lyndon Dykes has since back to fitness, and Sinclaiir Armstrong’s form has been a genuine benefit for the club this season.

As a result, Martin may have a more limited role to perform, but he is still capable of providing a lot. Furthermore, as previously stated, his temperament and impact in the locker room might be extremely beneficial to Ainsworth.

What next for QPR?

QPR have made a lot of noise since their opening-day defeat to Watford, but they’ve responded really well, winning two of their following four games.

There is a mood in the group, and fans will be more relaxed than they were after Vicarage Road’s awful first 45 minutes of the season.

Nonetheless, the squad is still weak in key areas, and Ainsworth will know he faces a battle to keep this side out of the relegation zone in the coming months, but he will feel it is achievable.

Following the international break, QPR will host Sunderland at Loftus Road.
