Darren Oxbrow, a retired professional footballer who played for teams including Ipswich Town, Colchester United, and Maidstone United, has shared his journey of battling Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, emphasizing the importance of early detection and support during his treatment.
Oxbrow’s cancer diagnosis came after experiencing persistent symptoms, including feeling unwell and losing weight, which initially were attributed to long Covid. Despite multiple visits to the doctor, it wasn’t until the third consultation that he received the devastating news of cancer.
The toughest moment for Oxbrow was discussing his illness with his four children, explaining why he had been feeling unwell. Throughout his six months of chemotherapy, he leaned on the unwavering support of his family, friends, and the dedicated staff at the Woolverstone Day Unit at Ipswich Hospital, where he received treatment.
Moved by the care he received, Oxbrow decided to give back by auctioning off a signed shirt from Ipswich Town’s current squad to raise funds for the Woolverstone Day Unit, recognizing the critical role such facilities play in supporting cancer patients.
