Bulldogs to Celebrate Season’s Stand Outs at the Dr George Peponis Medal

On Monday, September 9, the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs will be celebrating the Club’s annual award winners at the Dr George Peponis Medal.

Since 2023, the Club’s annual awards night has been named after Dr George Peponis OAM; MBBS, one of the finest ever players to ever pull on the Blue and White.

A Greek migrant hailing from the Peloponnese, George first took the field for the Bulldogs in 1974, going on to feature in 132 matches over a stellar nine-year career until 1982.

Over that period, George’s achievements in the game of Rugby League saw him captain the Bulldogs to two Grand Finals, including the 1980 Premiership, represent NSW in seven matches, and pull on the green and gold of Australia in eight Test matches, captaining five.PrestonMania: Jacob Preston took home the Dr George Peponis Medal in 2023, capping off a remarkable rookie season. He also took home the Rookie of the Year and Members' Player of the Year gongs.

Following his playing days, George held roles as Chairman of both the Club and the NSW Rugby League, and has since been named at hooker in the Berries to Bulldogs 70-Year Team of Champions in 2004. George was also inducted in the Bulldogs Ring of Champions in 2007, as well as the inaugural Hall of Fame in 2015 as one of just five players.

He is also a proud Life Member of the Football Club.

In a Club first, the event will include award winners for both senior and junior representatives, ranging from the Harold Matthews Cup and Lisa Fiaola Cup (Under 17s) all the way through to the Dr George Peponis Medal – awarded to the NRL player voted as the side’s Player of the Year.

The 2024 Dr George Peponis Medal will take place on Monday, September 9 following the Club’s final regular season round match of the 2024 season, to be played this Saturday at Accor Stadium against the Cowboys.

As part of the evening’s celebrations, there will be a raffle event that is open to the public offering a host of prizes to be won including a 2025 trip to the NRL’s Magic Round.
