Will Kyle Dubas remain with the Maple Leafs? He says he doesn’t want to be a GM anywhere else

The Leafs executive said Monday he needs to discuss things with his family before making any decisions about his future with the organization.

An emotional Kyle Dubas hinged his future as general manager of the Maple Leafs on discussions he plans to have with his family – a family, he says, that has “been through a lot” over the last year and more.

The 37-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the club and was visibly emotional as he addressed the situation at a season-ending media availability Monday following the Leafs’ second-round playoff loss to the Florida Panthers.

“I’ve had a good, long relationship with (Leafs president Brendan Shanahan) and ownership, and I will speak to them in the coming days, but more importantly, I will speak to my family, my wife, Shannon, and our family tonight and tomorrow, and see where we’re at as a family,” Dubas said.

“What I would say is that it requires a full family discussion. My family is obviously very important to me, so for me to commit to anything (hinges on) having a full understanding of what this year took on them … it is probably unfair for me to answer where I’m at (right now) … it was a very hard year on them.”

Dubas stressed that if he is a GM next season, it will be in Toronto and nowhere else.

He was also non-committal when discussing head coach Sheldon Keefe’s future.

“What I would say is that I don’t have (inclination) to go anywhere else,” Dubas said. “It will be either here, or taking time to recalibrate and reflect on the seasons here. But you won’t see me next week popping up somewhere else. I won’t put them (family) through that after this year.”

Dubas was hired by Shanahan in the summer of 2014 as assistant GM under Dave Nonis. He became co-interim GM with Mark Hunter after Nonis’s firing in April 2015 and remained there until Lou Lamoriello was hired that July. After three years learning under Lamoriello, Dubas got the big chair.
