Hans-Joachim Watzke expects new signings to make Borussia Dortmund more stable

Hans-Joachim Watzke is confident that even though Borussia Dortmund’s haven’t made any spectacular moves in the transfer market, their new signings will make the team more stable.

It has been a rather uneventful transfer window compared to usual for Borussia Dortmund, who have made just three signings this summer. The Black and Yellows have signed Ramy Bensebaini, Felix Nmecha and Marcel Sabitzer to compensate for the departures of Jude Bellingham, Raphael Guerreiro and Mahmoud Dahoud.

BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke believes that this season will show how consistent the team is. The 64 year old is confident that the summer signings will bring more stability to Edin Terzic’s side.

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Watzke said:

“The season finale was another indication that things have gotten tighter over the past three, four, five years. And you could see how much joy this finale brought to the whole league, even if I would have liked a different outcome.”

“We perhaps overperformed a little bit during the months after the World Cup until the end of the season. Now we’ll see how stable we are. This summer we lost Jude Bellingham, who is undoubtedly one of a kind, but I think we can compensate well for his departure with the signings of Marcel Sabitzer and Felix Nmecha.”

“We may not have made the most spectacular transfers, but these signings will make us more stable.”

Watzke also believes that even though Bayern Munich’s heyday may be over, it will be very difficult for other clubs to win the Bundesliga title if they manage to get to 80 points.

“With every defeat that FC Bayern suffers, the inhibition level of other clubs drops. In Munich’s heyday, many opponents took to the pitch feeling they had no chance and didn’t even believe they could win.”

“Those days may be over. And yet they still have a great team and unique opportunities in Germany. No other Bundesliga club could have managed to sign Harry Kane.”

Bayern Munich won the Bundesliga title last season with 71 points. Borussia Dortmund also managed to reach the 71-point mark, but their inferior goal difference saw them miss out on their first Bundesliga title in 11 years.

Borussia Dortmund began their 2023/24 season with an unconvincing 1-0 win over FC Köln at home. While Bayern Munich cruised to a 4-0 win away to Werder Bremen.
