Wrexham have declared that their new Kop stand will not be ready for the 2024-25 season.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the club’s Hollywood owners, originally committed to erect a new 5,500-seater stand ahead of next season, increasing the capacity at the Racecourse Ground to 16,000 seats.

However, the League Two club has since stated that this will no longer be viable, and that a start date for construction work has yet to be decided upon.

‘The new Kop will not be open for the start of the 2024/25 season, with a planned build period of 12 months from commencement on site,’ according to a club statement. There is no set commencement date because various issues must be overcome before that can be confirmed.

‘Before signing a contract to build the Kop, the grant financing agreement from Wrexham County Borough Council must be finalised and the Club must be satisfied that the requirements related to the funding offer can be met.

It is hoped that these talks would be concluded by the end of October 2023.’

The club then listed a series of conditions that must be completed before work on the stand can begin.

One of the conditions was that Wrexham obtain clarification from UEFA on the requirements for Category four stadium status.

Currently, UEFA ranks stadiums from one to four, with the latter value required for a club to host games in the Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League, Nations League, and European Championship.

Reynolds and McElhenney have already declared that their ultimate ambition is to take the team all the way to the Premier League, and they appear to be adamant about having a stadium suited for the top division.

Wrexham were promoted from the National League last season and are off to a good start in their first season back in the Football League in 15 years.
