Gareth Southgate told to make Lewis Dunk decision as Brighton star praised after Wolves win

Gareth Southgate was in attendance at Molineux on Saturday afternoon as Brighton blew away Wolves 4-1 thanks to goals from Solly March, Kaoru Mitoma and Pervis Estupinan

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp says he doesn’t know how Lewis Dunk has not earned more caps for England.

The 31-year-old centre-back has been a rock at the back for Albion and has grown into one of the team’s most important players under Graham Potter and now Roberto De Zerbi.

At the time, he said: “I was proud to be recalled to the England squad. My first England cap remains one of the proudest moments of my career. I never gave up hope, and I hope that opportunity will come again.

“I’m sorry it won’t be this summer but at the end of the season, a few of us had to step up to achieve our aim of European football. A few of us were playing on adrenaline, pushing ourselves through games. I had a couple of injury issues, but our aim was to secure that top-six place and create history.”

Dunk has since recovered from his injury and has been back in the heart of the Brighton defence for the start of the 2023/24 season which has seen Albion win both their opening Premier League games by a 4-1 scoreline

Luton Town were first put to the sword at the Amex Stadium on the opening day before, last Saturday, the Seagulls blew away Wolves at Molineux thanks to a brace from Solly March plus strikes from Kaoru Mitoma and Pervis Estupinan.

Southgate was in the stands watching on, with Redknapp saying the England boss was bound to be impressed by Dunk after he put in yet another commanding display for his boyhood club.

“There’s not many better defenders in the league than Lewis Dunk, I don’t know how he’s not had more England caps,” Redknapp told BetVictor. “He’s not the quickest but he’s so strong, so good in the air and reads the game so well.

“He’s better on the ball than people realise too, he’s such a leader for this Brighton side. Gareth Southgate was at the game on Saturday, he’s bound to have been impressed.”

Redknapp picked Dunk, March and Mitoma in his Premier League team of the week which also featured Tottenham duo Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr as well as Manchester City’s Phil Foden.
