Everton: Toffees set to take huge financial hit on failing player

The Toffees have failed once again the transfer window…

Everton’s transfer dealings has probably been among the worst in the Premier League in recent years, with the Toffees spending a whopping €118 million (£102 million) in the last two seasons, only to be relegated in both.

As talks with 777 Partners to secure the club’s ownership allegedly progress, those at Goodison Park must ensure that recruitment improves in future windows. One thing the new owners will want to avoid is suffering transfer losses on players who arrive with a lot of promise before becoming a flop and leaving for a tiny sum.

What’s the latest Everton transfer news?

Alex Iwobi’s departure, which occurred late in the summer transfer window, was the most significant for Everton. The midfielder joined Fulham on deadline day, leaving Sean Dyche’s side lacking in midfield.

Even with most transfer windows closed, the exits continue, with another midfielder drawing closer to a move to the Turkish Super Lig, concluding a mixed tenure at Goodison Park.

According to TeamTalk, Fenerbace are in early talks to recruit forgotten man Andre Gomes for as little as £5 million, having initially joining Everton for a reported £22 million in the summer of 2019. If the sale goes through, Everton will suffer a 77% loss, demonstrating exactly how bad they’ve been in the transfer market in recent years.

With the transfer window slamming shut in the Turkish Super Lig on Friday, Fenerbahce will need to act quickly if they want to complete a move, that’s for sure, but it’s certainly a deal that would suit all parties.

Should Everton sell Andre Gomes?

As much as Everton would be taking a loss on Gomes by selling him to Fenerbahce before the deadline, the Spaniard has become a forgotten man at Goodison Park after spending last season on loan at Lille in Ligue 1, so it is the right decision.

It briefly looked as though he could get a chance under Dyche when he was included in the squad to face Fulham on the opening day – three absences since then suggest that all parties are ready to cut ties, however.

Those on Merseyside will at least save money with Gomes’ departure, as he now earns an estimated £112k per week at Goodison Park.

In another world, Gomes may have earned a second chance in the Premier League and seized it with both hands, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

According to FBref, the midfielder made 8.84 progressive passes per 90 minutes for Lille last season and had five goal involvements. As a result, there is still a capable player in the mix. It doesn’t appear that Gomes will get another chance to show that at Everton.
