Enthusiastic Valkyries fans are sure to appreciate Martin’s commitment…
Kate Martin, the star guard for the Golden State Valkyries, was spotted diligently training during the offseason on Sunday, February 5. Aiming to bolster her fitness and skill set with a series of basketball drills, the 24-year-old is clearly gearing up to spearhead her new team’s campaign for success.
Drafted by the Valkyries during the expansion draft on December 6, Martin has been fully committed to her preparations for the upcoming season. A recent Instagram post by fitness trainer Maxwell Schmarzo showcased a workout clip featuring Martin as they engaged in competitive off-the-move shooting drills, heavy lifting, and explosive jumping exercises. Schmarzo, who operates under the Instagram handle ‘strong_by_science’, praised Martin’s work ethic with a caption that read
“Some awesome work with @katemartin! Competitive off-the-move shooting drills, heavy lifting, and some jumping! @katemartin really puts in the work. I think a lot of younger athletes could learn a lot from how pros approach their training. No wasted time, very focused, with a mindset to learn and improve.”
As Martin joins former Aces assistant coach Natalie Nakase at the helm, there’s anticipation surrounding the Valkyries’ first season. Nakase brings a pedigree of success, having clinched multiple titles with the Aces, and alongside a youthful roster spearheaded by Martin, they are poised to make a significant impact during their inaugural season.
Enthusiastic Valkyries fans are sure to appreciate Martin’s commitment, particularly as she goes above and beyond in her training regimen.
Although the 2025 WNBA season kicks off on May 17, Martin is already focusing on her fresh start. Sharing snippets from her training sessions with Schmarzo, the former Iowa standout has been in rigorous training since December 9, demonstrating her determination to excel in her new role.
The two have been collaborating intensively, with Schmarzo releasing several videos that highlight competitive drills and pickup games. Martin’s inaugural training session included comprehensive gym work, which Schmarzo celebrated on his Instagram with the caption:
