Dortmund outline ‘difficult’ reality ahead of Newcastle, AC Milan and PSG Champions League ties

Newcastle United will take on Europe’s elite clubs in the Champions League group of death

Emre Can, captain of Borussia Dortmund and a former Liverpool midfielder, believes that every team in Newcastle United’s group of death has enough quality to go to the Champions League knockout stages. The Magpies will face the Bundesliga runners-up, AC Milan, last year’s semi-finalists, and PSG, the reigning French champions.

Eddie Howe’s team could not have been dealt a more difficult group, but all four teams are mindful of one another’s abilities. Dortmund lost the Bundesliga title on the final day of the previous season, with Bayern pipping them to the top spot once more.

It meant that Die Schwarzgelben were sent to Pot 2 of the draw, whereas Milan were assigned to Pot 3. Mats Hummels, a veteran Dortmund defender, was quick to express his sentiments following the stalemate.

“What a group – here we go,” Hummels wrote on X, which used to be Twitter. Can, a midfielder, agreed with his fellow German international.

“We certainly got into the strongest of all the groups,” said the BVB captain, according to WDR1. “Every team has the ability to advance to the knockout stage.”

Newcastle will undoubtedly do everything in their power to ensure they are not a dream opponent for any of their group rivals, with Dortmund chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke explaining just what is required to progress.

“Our group is certainly the most difficult, and a fantastic group,” he remarked. “But we’ll take it. We’ll be up against three of the best. To survive in this group, you must deliver excellent performance, which is exactly what we want from our staff.”

“This group is a real challenge,” Dortmund head coach Edin Terzic stated. A challenge that we are looking forward to and will take on wholeheartedly. Paris St. Germain, AC Milan, and Newcastle United are three formidable opponents. That has changed, but it does not imply that we will enter the Champions League without high hopes of reaching the knockout stage.”
