There was some surprise when world No. 1 Novak Djokovic decided to enter the Geneva Open this week, a rare move just before a Grand Slam tournament. However, Djokovic explained that after playing sparingly since the Australian Open and not meeting his expectations in Monte-Carlo or Rome, getting extra match practice is crucial.

Djokovic expressed that he believes match play is the best form of preparation for him at the moment, stating that he needs more matches to regain the form necessary for Roland-Garros. He sees this tournament as an opportunity to find his rhythm and sharpen his game ahead of the Grand Slam event.

The defending champion at Roland-Garros, Djokovic will kick off his campaign in Geneva on Wednesday, coincidentally his 37th birthday, facing Yannick Hanfmann. He has been diligently working off the court with his new fitness coach to enhance his endurance and physical strength, crucial for competing in a best-of-five Grand Slam on the demanding clay surface.

Djokovic is hopeful to get multiple matches in Geneva to fine-tune his game before heading to Paris for the main event.
