Rob McElhenney saw Wrexham secure big win in promotion push
ROB MCELHENNEY described Paul Mullin as an inspiration and he believes Wrexham will continue to get bigger and bigger during the prolific striker’s spell at The Racecourse.
Co-chairman McElhenney was present on Saturday when Mullin scored a first-half hat-trick as Phil Parkinson’s men continued the League Two promotion push with a brilliant 4-0 home win over Accrington Stanley.
Mullin went eight games without scoring until he ended the barren run with a last-gasp equaliser in last Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Forest Green Rovers, and the treble against Accrington took the Reds’ leading scorer onto 16 goals for the season.
Since joining Wrexham in the summer of 2021, Mullin has found the back of the net 95 times and McElhenney praised the 29-year-old frontman, who is under contract until the summer of 2027, for his contribution.
“The question I get asked more than anything is ‘are the guys like that in real life?’, and Paul is exactly like this all the time,” said McElhenney, co-owner along with Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds.
“It is always the same answer with him: ‘ I just put in a shift, I do my work and I go back home to my family’.
“What a great game. For me, it was an incredibly fortunate weekend to pick but I have nothing to do with what goes on out there.
“This man and these players are just special.
“Paul was admittedly having a little bit of a rough patch. I spoke to him about it and all the way through he said ‘I feel pretty good, it is just a matter of time’, and then you see what happens today so what a beautiful sport.
“When you put in the work like Paul does, good things happen.
“The man you see in the documentary is the man who he is, he has inspired millions of people all over the world for so many different reasons and I am just so proud that he is a part of the organisation, not just because he scores a hat-trick every once in a while!
“The more games that this man plays for this club, the bigger this club is going to continue to get.”
The clash with Accrington was the first since it was announced that the temporary Kop stand at The Racecourse is being sponsored by Four Walls, the Irish American Whiskey brand which has
McElhenney as co-founder along with Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day.
McElhenney can see the benefit of the north Wales stadium being four-sided and stressed that the plan is still to build to build a bigger, permanent stand.
“I absolutely love it,” he said.
“I asked the players are they enjoying it because to me, it adds so much more vibrancy and action.
“To me, the most important thing is to make sure that another 2,300 people have tickets to the games Glenn Howerton
“The bigger plan, as everyone knows, is to build a bigger stand so that the whole town of Wrexham can be accommodated.”
Wrexham have 11 games remaining in the quest for a second successive promotion and McElhenney added: “I am going to be back in April.
“Many of those games will be very important but hopefully one will be a really important game.”
