Before the 2024 season started, notable trades included Juan Soto, Corbin Burnes, and Dylan Cease, along with several standout players from Nippon Professional Baseball making their way to the majors. Additionally, the Dodgers invested over $1 billion to enhance their roster.

We had some early predictions about the offseason’s winners and losers, but the first third of the regular season has brought many unexpected developments, both good and bad, that provide a clearer view of the best moves made this winter.

While Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto are delivering the expected boost to their teams and Seth Lugo and Shōta Imanaga are exceeding expectations, Blake Snell and Jordan Montgomery — two prominent free agents — have struggled after signing later than expected. Josh Hader, the top closer on the market, posted a 6.39 ERA in April but found his groove in May. Unfortunately, Jung Hoo-Lee’s debut season ended prematurely due to a season-ending shoulder injury.

Clearly, not every anticipated impactful move has played out as expected. There’s still plenty of time for things to change, but for now, considering contract terms and how players were acquired, here are the 30-plus offseason deals and additions proving to be the most beneficial in 2024.
