Commanders’ Montez Sweat gets optimistic injury update after win over Falcons

Fans of the Washington Commanders can breathe a sigh of relief after learning that defensive end Montez Sweat’s thumb injury was not as serious as first thought. Sweat suffered a thumb injury in the Commanders’ 24-16 victory over the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6.

According to a source, X-rays on #Commanders DE Montez Sweat’s thumb injury came back negative. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, “the initial belief is that the injury is not serious.”

Early in the third quarter, Montez Sweat injured his thumb while attempting to stop Falcons’ Cordarelle Patterson. Casey Toohill took over for Sweat and immediately made an impact, sacking Falcons quarterback Desmond Ridder on third down. Toohill added another QB pressure to his tally.

Montez Sweat is on track to record double-digit sacks this season.
Montez Sweat has spent his entire five-year NFL career with the Commanders. He is nearing the end of his deal with Washington. Sweat had 14 solo tackles, 4.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles in five games for Washington prior to his thumb injury against the Falcons.

Sweat has never had more than ten sacks in his five seasons. In 2020, he came close to meeting his objective with nine sacks for the Commanders. Fortunately, Montez Sweat is expected to play against the New York Giants in Week 7. If he avoids injuries for the rest of the season, he might surpass 10 sacks for the first time in his NFL career.

Sweat’s outstanding performance in training camp appeared to be a portent of things to come in 2023. Sweat’s explosiveness and agility off the line of scrimmage wowed Commanders head coach Ron Rivera.

In Week 7, Montez Sweat will face Daniel Jones of the Giants. Jones has a neck issue that will keep him out of Sunday’s SNF game against the Buffalo Bills. However, he is very likely to play against Washington. Let’s see if Montez Sweat can help the Commanders overcome Jones and gain ground in the NFC East.
