“Our star player delivered an absolutely phenomenal performance against Minnesota. It was one of those games where everything seemed to click perfectly. His skill, determination, and leadership on the field were evident from start to finish. He made critical plays, showcased exceptional athleticism, and truly carried the team on his back. This kind of display is what sets great players apart, and he certainly proved why he’s considered one of the best. Rowdy Tellez hits his second homer of the season as Pirates shut down reeling Twins 4-0 | Baseball | kdhnews.com

Rowdy Tellez homered and drove in three runs while six Pittsburgh relievers kept the Minnesota Twins in check, leading the Pirates to a 4-0 victory on Saturday.

Tellez, who had been struggling and frequently booed at home, turned things around by hitting a changeup from Simeon Woods Richardson (2-1) just over the center-field wall in the seventh inning for his first homer since March 31. The crowd, which had jeered him earlier, then called for a curtain call, which Tellez obliged. His batting average rose to .208 with this performance.

In the ninth inning, Tellez added a two-run single to provide additional breathing room, helping the Pirates secure their fourth win in five games.

Hunter Stratton (2-1) earned the win, thanks in part to a spectacular catch by second baseman Nick Gonzales to end the seventh inning. With two outs and two on, pinch-hitter Manuel Margot hit a flare into shallow center field, which Gonzales tracked down with a sliding, over-the-shoulder grab.

Michael A. Taylor, back from paternity leave following the birth of his son on June 2, delivered an RBI single in the ninth. Andrew McCutchen had three hits, and Bryan Reynolds extended his hitting streak to seven games with two hits.

The Twins, on the other hand, have now lost five straight games and were shut out for the second consecutive game, bringing their scoreless streak to 22 innings. Despite having six hits — all singles — only one player reached third base.

The solid start by Woods Richardson, who struck out six and walked one, was spoiled by the lack of offense. The rookie made just one mistake that Tellez capitalized on for a cathartic blast.

With three starting pitchers — Martin Perez, Marco Gonzales, and Quinn Priester — on the injured list, the Pirates turned to a bullpen game. Carmen Mlodzinski started and got the first five outs, followed by Luis Ortiz, who held Minnesota scoreless for 4 1/3 innings. Justin Bruihl, Stratton, Colin Holderman, and David Bednar also contributed to the shutout, marking the Pirates’ third shutout victory in five days.
